This section explains how care workers can help a client to apply for assistance from the Bankers Benevolent Fund.
How the application process works
The Fund is constantly seeking new applicants from eligible people – see applying for help. If you know of someone who you think would qualify for help, please do get in touch with us. Contact us for an application form, or download one.
1. Please make sure the applicant provides any relevant service information on their application form. 2. Once we’ve established eligibility and the circumstances of the case, we need to know about an applicant’s financial circumstances. Mostly, those assisted by the Fund will have income of no more than 80% of the average UK household income (after housing costs, tax and the age and number of children are taken into account). This level is reviewed annually by the Trustees. 3. In most cases, the Fund will expect applicants to have spent their savings down to Department of Work & Pensions limits before asking for assistance. 4. We also take into consideration the possibility that other family members might be able to provide support and whether alternative sources of statutory and charitable funding are available. 5. Like most other charities, and following the Charity Commission’s guidance, it is the Fund’s policy that all applicants should first apply for all statutory benefits to which they may be entitled before they apply to us. Once they have returned their application form to us, we will review it to see if they are eligible for assistance. 6. After this, we prepare a recommendation for the Trustees to consider. We conduct all reviews by post and telephone. 7. The Trustees meet every quarter to consider applications that are outside of the powers delegated to the Chief Executive. If you’d like to find out more, please call us on 020 7216 8981 or use the contact us page on this website.

Who qualifies?
Sometimes people are not sure if they are eligible for assistance. For example, did the bank they (or their late spouse) worked for qualify? (some former Building Societies are now eligible). And sometimes they are unsure when, or how long, their employment period with the bank was.
If they are unsure, they should still get in touch with us. If your client has worked in a bank insurance subsidiary company they may be eligible to apply to The Insurance Charities. Visit www.theinsurancecharities.com where you may be able to find help. | ||||||||||||
