present state of the fund
In the 125 years since the Fund was started, it has changed and adapted to meet the changing times.

The Fund now sits alongside more than 200 other UK occupational benevolent funds as the occupational benevolent fund for the banking community. These funds gave grants of around £125 million to more than 200,000 beneficiaries last year. We can often help in situations where benevolent funds of an individual bank are prohibited by their rules from providing support, for example in the case of deferred pensioners.
Today the Fund operates in the following areas:

  • Contributing towards the education of children who are disadvantaged as a result of the death or disability of a parent

  • Improving the quality of life for those on low incomes who have had to retire early due to disablement or ill health

  • Helping elderly former bankers on low incomes to lead a lifestyle which permits healthy living, social inclusion and promotes feelings of safety and security. We also help this group meet the financial burden of mobility and accessibility costs where their incomes are inadequate.
